How to safely remove mold and reduce closet humidity?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our walk-in closet, which is on an interior wall. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes. What's the best way to clean this safely and what can I do to keep the humidity down in that specific room to prevent it from coming back?

First, address the visible mold safely. For a small area like a corner, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the affected surface with a microfiber cloth dampened with a solution of white vinegar or a mild detergent. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn't address the root cause. Dry the area thoroughly immediately after cleaning. If the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the back of furniture, replacement is often necessary instead of cleaning.
To reduce humidity in that specific closet, the goal is to improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors open as often as possible. If the closet has an AC vent, ensure it is fully open and not blocked by clothes or storage boxes. A small, portable dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant dehumidifier unit placed inside can make a significant difference. For a more integrated solution, have your HVAC system checked to ensure it is properly balanced and effectively dehumidifying your entire villa. Given the location on an interior wall and the recent high humidity, there is a strong possibility the mold growth is more extensive behind the wall. This is a common issue in Dubai villas where thermal bridging can cause condensation inside walls. A professional inspection with a borescope can assess the cavity without destructive testing. For persistent or recurring mold, a lab analysis can identify the species, which informs the correct remediation protocol and helps pinpoint the exact moisture source. |
