How to safely remove mold behind furniture?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall. It’s been worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What’s the best way to get rid of this safely without having to move all our furniture out for a major renovation?

First, determine the extent. If the mold covers more than one square meter, or if you see it has penetrated through the paint into the drywall or plaster, professional remediation is strongly advised to prevent structural damage and airborne spore release.
For smaller, surface-level growth, you can address it yourself with caution. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow complete air circulation. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach; it only lightens the colour and doesn't kill the roots. White vinegar is a more effective alternative. After cleaning, dry the wall thoroughly with a fan. The key is to eliminate the moisture source. In Dubai, this mold is almost certainly due to condensation. The exterior wall is likely a thermal bridge, where the cold from your AC meets the outside heat, causing water to condense behind the furniture where air doesn't circulate. Simply cleaning it will not be a permanent fix. To prevent recurrence, you must improve air flow and reduce humidity. Keep the wardrobe at least two to three inches away from the wall. Use a moisture absorber like a desiccant tub in that corner. Ensure your AC unit is properly serviced and draining correctly, as a clogged drain line can elevate indoor humidity levels. For a definitive diagnosis of the mold type and to identify the exact moisture source, a professional inspection with humidity mapping is the most reliable approach. |
