How to safely remove mold behind wardrobe in JVC?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's gotten worse because we keep the AC off during the day to save money. What's the best way to get rid of this safely and who should I call for a proper assessment?

The black spots behind your wardrobe in JVC are a common issue here, directly linked to our high humidity and condensation from AC cycling. The wall likely stays cold, and when you turn the AC off, warm humid air condenses there, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold.

For your safety, do not attempt to scrub it. Disturbing the mold releases spores into your air. First, move the wardrobe to fully assess the spread. If the affected area is larger than one square meter, or if it has penetrated through the paint to the wallboard itself, professional remediation is strongly advised. Smaller surface-level mold can sometimes be addressed by carefully wiping the area with a diluted vinegar or detergent solution, but you must wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles during any contact.

However, the critical step is identifying and fixing the moisture source. Simply cleaning the visible mold is a temporary fix if the underlying cause remains. In Dubai, this is often due to a combination of high ambient humidity and a thermal bridge (the cold wall). A proper assessment from a certified mold inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint why that specific wall is condensing water. They can determine if your AC unit needs rebalancing for better dehumidification or if the wall requires additional insulation.

For a definitive answer on the mold type and health risk, a sample can be sent for lab analysis. The most effective companies will provide a clear protocol for removal, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, and verify with post-remediation testing that the space is truly clean and the moisture issue is resolved.
