How to safely remove mold behind wardrobe without spreading spores?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the wall behind our son’s wardrobe in the bedroom. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s affecting his allergies, as he’s been sneezing a lot more in the mornings. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this ourselves without making the spores spread?

Based on your description of the situation, you are dealing with a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant use of air conditioning. The wall behind the wardrobe is a cold spot with poor air circulation, causing moisture to condense and create the perfect environment for mold, which is likely exacerbating your son's allergy symptoms.

For a small, contained area, you can attempt to clean it yourself, but you must take extreme care to prevent spore dissemination. First, isolate the area by sealing the room and closing the HVAC vents. Wear an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and eye protection. Gently mist the moldy area with a soapy water solution from a spray bottle; this dampens the surface and pins the spores down, preventing them from becoming airborne during cleaning. Never dry brush or scrub.

Wipe the area clean using disposable cloths, working from the outside of the patch inward. After cleaning, all used cloths and any disposable materials must be sealed in a plastic bag before disposal. Follow up by wiping the area with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) or a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide to disinfect and discourage regrowth. Critically, you must address the moisture source. Move the wardrobe at least 2-3 inches away from the wall to restore airflow. Use a dehumidifier in the room and ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly to maintain low humidity levels.

However, given that the mold is in a bedroom and is already suspected of affecting health, a professional inspection is strongly advised. What you see on the surface is often just the tip of the iceberg. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent of the growth and identify all contributing moisture sources.
