How to safely remove mold from closet and save clothes?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed these black, speckled patches spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's been extra humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of air circulation made it worse. What's the best way to get rid of this safely, and should we throw out all the clothes that were near it?

Black mold in closets is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use, which creates ideal conditions for growth. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself safely. For anything larger, or if the mold has penetrated drywall, a professional inspection is needed to assess the full extent and prevent recurrence.
To clean, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted detergent. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and can push spores deeper. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan or dehumidifier. Fix the source of moisture—this is often poor air circulation. Leave the closet empty and the door open for a few days with the AC on to ensure it's fully dry. For clothes, do not automatically discard them. Wash machine-washable items with hot water and detergent; the agitation is key. For dry-clean-only items, inform the cleaner about the mold so they can use appropriate treatments. Sun-drying in the intense UAE heat is highly effective at killing remaining spores. Only discard items if the mold growth is heavy and the fabric is visibly degraded. The key to prevention is controlling humidity; using moisture-absorbing products like silica gel packs in enclosed spaces can help. |
