How to safely remove mold from clothes in Dubai home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks, and I just pulled out some winter clothes from the back of the master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa and found a bunch of them covered in black and green fuzzy spots. I’m really worried about their health and that the spores have spread. What is the most effective and safe way to get rid of this mold for good without putting my family at risk?

Discard heavily contaminated clothes immediately, especially porous materials like cotton or wool, as they cannot be fully remediated. For washable items you wish to save, take them outside to brush off loose spores before bringing them inside to launder. This prevents spreading spores through your home's air.

Wash the salvageable clothes at the highest temperature the fabric allows, adding a cup of white vinegar or a mold-killing laundry additive to the cycle. Sun-drying is highly effective in our climate, as UV radiation acts as a natural disinfectant.

The discovery on clothes strongly indicates a reservoir mold problem within the closet and likely the room itself, driven by Dubai's high humidity and condensation from AC systems. Spores have almost certainly aerosolized. Do not attempt to clean the closet yourself with bleach, as this can agitate spores and only removes surface discoloration, not the root cause.

With children experiencing respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent of hidden growth in walls or the AC system, which is a common amplification site. Remediation must address the moisture source—often poor ventilation or a leaking AC condensate drain—and physically remove the contamination using containment protocols to prevent cross-contamination. Look for providers who can conduct pre- and post-remediation testing to verify the environment has been returned to a safe condition.
