How to safely remove mold from kids' clothes?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I’m worried sick. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the storage cupboard under our stairs in Jumeirah and found a bunch of them covered in black spots. We had that minor leak from the AC condensation pipe a couple of months ago and I think the humidity never left. What is the most effective and child-safe way to get rid of this mold for good?

Based on your description of the situation in your Jumeirah home, this is a serious concern that requires immediate and careful action, especially given the health symptoms in your children. The combination of a previous AC condensation leak and our high Dubai humidity creates a perfect breeding ground for mold, which has likely permeated not just the clothes but the storage area itself.

First, do not attempt to simply wash the visibly affected clothes. Agitating moldy fabrics can release a massive amount of microscopic spores into your home's air, exacerbating respiratory issues. For child safety, the contaminated items should be handled with extreme caution. Seal the moldy clothes in heavy-duty plastic bags immediately to prevent cross-contamination. Depending on the fabric's value and the extent of the growth, disposal may be the safest option to protect your family's health.

Effective remediation must address the source, not just the symptom. The storage cupboard needs a professional inspection. The mold growth on the clothes is a clear indicator of a persistent humidity problem within that enclosed space. This is a common issue in UAE properties where AC condensation issues are not fully resolved, leading to hidden moisture trapped in walls and cabinetry.

For a situation involving health effects and a suspected hidden moisture source, a DIY approach is strongly discouraged. Proper remediation requires containment of the area, use of HEPA filtration devices to purify the air, and specialized antimicrobial treatments to ensure the mold is eradicated at its root.

I highly recommend you call for a professional inspection.
