How to safely remove mold from my Dubai villa wall?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa has patches of black and green mold spreading across it. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it after moving the furniture to rearrange the room. I’m really worried about our health and it ruining the walls. What is the most effective and safe way to remove this myself, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai?

Mold behind furniture in a Jumeirah villa is a common issue here, often caused by condensation from year-round AC use creating a cold wall surface against the humid air. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt removal yourself with proper safety precautions.
First, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. Isolate the area by closing the door and covering the air conditioning vent. A solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (one part bleach to four parts water) can be effective on non-porous surfaces. Scrub the area thoroughly, but avoid over-saturating the wallboard. Allow it to dry completely using a fan, and then consider applying a mold-resistant primer before repainting. However, the presence of multiple colors (black and green) and the fact it was hidden and spreading suggests a deeper issue. The wall cavity may have a persistent moisture problem from a small leak or sustained condensation that DIY cleaning won't fix. In Dubai's climate, the mold will almost certainly return unless the underlying moisture source is identified and resolved. For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of the water intrusion. Reputable companies will also conduct pre- and post-remediation testing to verify the mold species and confirm the spore count has been returned to safe levels, which is the only way to be certain the problem is truly solved for your family's health. |
