How to safely remove mold from my humid apartment closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. What's the best way to get rid of this safely and permanently, and should I call my landlord first or just handle it myself?

The black spots in your closet are a common issue in Jumeirah apartments, especially on exterior walls that experience thermal bridging from the heat and humidity. This creates condensation, which mold feeds on. For a small area (under one square meter), you can handle this yourself safely.

First, notify your landlord in writing with photos. Under Dubai rental law, structural issues like this, often stemming from external wall insulation or seepage, are typically the landlord's responsibility to fix permanently. They should address the root cause.

For safe DIY removal, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted bleach solution (follow product instructions carefully). Scrub the area gently, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. Never mix cleaning chemicals.

However, DIY only removes the visible growth. If the spots return quickly, the moisture source is still active or the mold may have spread deeper. In Dubai's climate, with year-round AC use creating temperature differentials, a professional inspection is often needed to identify the hidden humidity source—whether it's a leaking pipe in the wall, inadequate insulation, or AC condensate drain overflow. A proper assessment can determine if the wall cavity requires treatment to prevent recurrence.
