How to safely remove mold from wardrobe and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past week and I finally pulled their wooden wardrobe away from the wall in our Deira apartment. There's a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner where the AC unit's condensation pipe might be leaking. It's been so humid lately and I'm panicking about their health. What's the first thing I should do to clean this safely and stop it from coming back?

Stop the AC unit immediately to prevent further condensation. Move children and pets to a well-ventilated room away from the affected area.
For a patch of this size and given the health symptoms, professional remediation is strongly advised. The black, fuzzy appearance and its location near a suspected leak indicate a significant moisture issue that requires addressing the source first. In Dubai's high humidity, surface cleaning alone will not prevent rapid regrowth. If you choose to clean it yourself as a temporary measure, wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Never use bleach, as it can release harmful fumes and doesn't prevent regrowth. Use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub the affected wood, but be prepared that the mold may have penetrated deeply, making complete DIY removal difficult. The critical step is fixing the source of the moisture. This is almost certainly a blocked or leaking condensation drain line from the AC unit, a very common issue here. A licensed AC technician must unblock and test the drain line. Afterwards, improve airflow around the wardrobe and consider using a desiccant dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid summer months. Given the coughing and the size of the infestation, a professional inspection is warranted to assess the extent and identify the exact species, as some types common in UAE homes can cause persistent respiratory irritation. |
