How to safely remove mold from wardrobe myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for a couple of weeks and I finally pulled their wooden wardrobe away from the wall in our Khalifa City villa. The back of it is covered in this scary black fuzz, and the wall behind feels damp. We’ve had the AC running constantly to fight the humidity. What’s the safest and fastest way to get rid of this myself without making my family sick?

Black mold on a wardrobe in a humid UAE villa is a common issue due to condensation from constant AC use against exterior walls. The damp wall behind it is the real problem that must be addressed.

For a small area, you can clean it yourself with precautions. First, isolate the area. Keep children and family members with respiratory issues away. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety goggles. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water) in a spray bottle. Avoid mixing chemicals. Spray the solution onto the moldy surface, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe everything down with damp cloths and dispose of all cleaning materials in a sealed bag. Dry the area completely with fans; moisture is the enemy.

However, the wall behind is likely the main colony. If the mold covers more than a square meter, has penetrated deeply into the wood or drywall, or returns after cleaning, professional assessment is strongly advised. They can identify the moisture source (often a condensation line issue or insufficient insulation) and ensure the hidden wall cavity is properly treated. In many cases, the wall material itself must be removed and replaced to fully resolve it. For health concerns with ongoing symptoms, a lab test can identify the mold species to better understand the risk.
