How to safely remove mold under AC vent?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It’s directly under the AC vent, which has been dripping a little lately. I’m really worried about our health and the damage to the walls. What’s the most effective way to safely remove this ourselves, and should we be calling a professional company for an inspection?

The black mold under your AC vent is likely caused by condensation from the dripping unit, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate where ACs run constantly. Start by addressing the source: have an HVAC technician fix the drip to prevent immediate recurrence.

For safe removal of the existing patch, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Isolate the area by closing the door and covering furniture with plastic sheeting. Lightly mist the mold with water to suppress spores, then scrub with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach; it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage paint. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan afterwards.

However, DIY removal is only for small surface areas (under one square meter). Given its location in a bedroom and the fact it's spreading, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The mold may have penetrated the gypsum board or insulation behind the wall, which you cannot see or properly address yourself. In the UAE, reputable remediation companies use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness. They will also conduct lab analysis to identify the species, as not all black mold is the high-concern Stachybotrys, and this determines the necessary containment and cleaning protocols. For a situation involving your home's AC system and potential structural moisture, an assessment is the prudent step to ensure it's resolved completely and your indoor air quality is safe.
