How to safely remove toddler's closet mold and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of my toddler's bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It must have been there a while because his allergies have been terrible this winter. I'm really worried about his health and need to get this sorted immediately. What is the most effective and child-safe method to remove it completely and prevent it from coming back?

The mold behind those boxes is likely due to Dubai's high humidity and condensation, especially in a closet against an exterior wall. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can handle it yourself safely. First, move your toddler to another room and keep the closet door closed until you begin.

Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water—avoid bleach as it only removes surface discoloration and can release harmful fumes. Scrub the area thoroughly with this solution, then wipe it down with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely. Dispose of any porous materials like cardboard boxes that were stored there.

To prevent recurrence, identify the moisture source. It's often condensation from the AC unit's cold air hitting the warmer wall. Ensure the closet isn't crammed full; allow air to circulate. A small disposable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet can help control moisture.

However, since this is in a toddler's room and allergies are already a concern, the safest approach is a professional assessment. The mold may have spread inside the wall cavity. A proper inspection includes moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source, and a lab analysis of a tape-lift sample can confirm the species to ensure it's not one of the more problematic types. Remediation for confirmed growth would involve containment and HEPA vacuuming to safely remove all spores.
