How to safely remove toddler's room mold without chemicals?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of my toddler’s bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It must have been there a while because he’s been sneezing a lot more than usual lately, especially after playing in his room. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of it myself without using harsh chemicals, since I’m worried about his breathing?

Black mold in a closet is a common issue in Dubai villas, often caused by trapped humidity from air conditioning condensation and lack of airflow. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can safely handle this yourself.

Start by moving all clothes and items out of the closet. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. Vinegar is a mild acid that kills many mold types and is safe for a child's room once it dries and the smell dissipates. Spray the area thoroughly until it's saturated, let it sit for an hour, then scrub gently with a soft brush or cloth. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. After scrubbing, wipe the area clean with a damp cloth and dry it completely with a fan or a dehumidifier.

The most critical step is to find and address the moisture source. In Al Barsha, this is often condensation from an AC duct running through the closet ceiling or a wall, or humidity trapped behind stored items. Ensure the closet is not overpacked and that air can circulate freely. Wiping down cold surfaces near AC vents regularly can prevent condensation buildup.

If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or is inside the wall, a professional inspection is needed to identify hidden moisture issues. Given your toddler's increased sneezing, a lab test to identify the mold species can provide peace of mind about the health risk, as some types are more allergenic than others.
