How to safely remove wardrobe mold and prevent its return?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the back of the bedroom wardrobe that shares a wall with the bathroom. I’m terrified it’s mold, especially with the humidity rising again. What’s the best way to clean this safely and is there anything I can do to stop it from coming back, like a specific dehumidifier or something for the wardrobe?

Black spots in a wardrobe adjacent to a bathroom are almost certainly mold, caused by trapped humidity and condensation—a very common issue in Dubai. The first step is to safely clean the affected area.
For a small area, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the mold off with a microfiber cloth dampened with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Avoid bleach; it only removes the color and can push spores into the air. After cleaning, allow the area to dry completely. Discard the cloth immediately. To prevent its return, you must address the moisture source. In this climate, condensation forms easily on cold walls, especially behind furniture. Increase air circulation by leaving wardrobe doors ajar periodically. A small, rechargeable dehumidifier or silica gel desiccant packs placed inside the wardrobe can help reduce ambient moisture. For the bathroom, ensure the exhaust fan runs during and for at least 30 minutes after showers. If the mold covers more than one square meter, returns quickly after cleaning, or you notice a persistent musty smell, a professional inspection is warranted. They can use moisture meters to identify hidden dampness in the wall and perform air or surface sampling to confirm the mold type, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation strategy. In many cases, the root cause is a small, unseen plumbing leak or significant condensation within the wall cavity. |
