How to safely treat black mold and prevent its return?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity getting trapped there. We had the windows open a lot during the cooler winter months. What's the best way to treat this safely and how can I stop it from coming back, especially with another humid summer coming up?

Black mold behind furniture in a humid climate like Dubai is a common trigger for respiratory issues like coughing. For a small, contained patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous surfaces.

However, because this is in a bedroom and your children are symptomatic, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Visible mold is often just the tip of the iceberg; it can spread inside walls. A proper assessment identifies the species and the full extent of the problem, which is crucial for safe, effective remediation.

To prevent its return, you must control the humidity that caused it. The trapped air behind the wardrobe created a perfect microclimate for mold. Move the furniture a few inches away from the wall to allow air circulation. Use a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the upcoming summer months when humidity is highest. Consistently run your air conditioning, as it dehumidifies the air as it cools. For a villa in Jumeirah, ensuring your AC system is serviced and draining properly is critical to managing indoor moisture levels year-round.
