How to safely treat black mold in a Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s an interior wall, and with the recent humidity, the musty smell is really strong. What's the best way to treat this safely and are there any specific dehumidifiers or moisture absorbers that actually work in a Dubai villa to stop it from coming back?

Black mold in a Dubai villa is often a symptom of excess moisture, typically from condensation due to constant AC use against the high ambient humidity. The first step is to address the moisture source; without that, it will return.
For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Do not bleach it, as this can sometimes exacerbate the problem by leaving behind the moisture and organic material the mold feeds on. After cleaning, the area must be thoroughly dried. For porous materials like drywall or the back of a closet, removal and replacement of the affected section is often the only permanent solution, as the roots (hyphae) penetrate deeply. A dehumidifier is essential for controlling humidity in a villa. Look for a compressor-based model with a capacity suitable for the room size, capable of maintaining humidity levels between 45-55%. Moisture absorbers (like calcium chloride boxes) are only effective for very small, enclosed spaces like a single cabinet, not an entire room. Given the musty smell and that it's on an interior wall, a professional inspection is highly recommended. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg; the mold may be growing within the wall cavity due to a small leak or severe condensation. A proper assessment, sometimes using a borescope, can determine the full extent. Companies with their own microbiology lab can also identify the species, which informs the correct remediation protocol and verifies the cleanup was successful through post-remediation testing. |
