How to stop AC leak and mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet seems to be leaking a little bit of water onto the floor, and now I’m finding black spots on some of my shoes and bags in there. I wiped it up, but I'm terrified it's going to come back and ruin more of my stuff in this humidity. What’s the best long-term solution to stop this mold from recurring after an AC drip?

The AC leak is the root cause, and Dubai's high humidity ensures mold will return if it's not fixed. First, stop the leak. It's likely a clogged condensate drain line, which is common here due to dust and continuous AC operation. A technician needs to clear the blockage and ensure the drain pan is properly sloped and draining. For the mold, simply wiping visible spots isn't enough; the spores are airborne.

You must address the moisture and the existing contamination. Move all affected items out of the closet to a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent further damage. For the closet itself, clean all surfaces with a detergent solution, but be aware this only removes surface mold, not the underlying infiltration. The enclosed, dark space is an ideal breeding ground.

To prevent recurrence, you need to control the environment. After the leak is repaired, run a dehumidifier in the room or consider installing a smaller, continuous-use dehumidifier in the closet itself. Ensure there is adequate air circulation; leaving the closet door ajar can help significantly. For a persistent problem, a professional inspection can identify the specific mold type and the full extent of growth, which often spreads inside wall cavities and ductwork after a leak.
