How to stop AC mold growth on my bedroom carpet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom’s AC unit in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet below, and now I’m starting to see a few black spots spreading out from the corner. It’s been getting worse since the humidity really kicked in last month. What’s the best way to tackle this myself to stop it from growing and damaging the wall before I have to call in a professional?

Your black spots are almost certainly mold growth, fueled by the AC's condensation leak and Dubai's high ambient humidity. The immediate priority is stopping the moisture source and containing the existing growth to prevent it from becoming an airborne issue.

First, address the leak. Turn off the AC unit at the circuit breaker. The drain line is likely clogged with algae or dust, a common issue here. Locate the PVC drain pipe exiting the unit or wall. You can try gently flushing it with a mixture of warm water and white vinegar to clear the blockage. Ensure the drain pan is also clear of debris. This stops new water from feeding the mold.

For the carpet, do not attempt to clean it with bleach or scrub it aggressively, as this can aerosolize spores. Instead, contain the area. Lightly mist the visible spots with water from a spray bottle to prevent spores from becoming airborne, then place a rag or paper towels over it to soak up the excess moisture in the carpet pad. If the carpet is wet, dry it as quickly as possible using fans, but only after the leak is fully repaired. The underlying carpet pad is likely compromised and may need replacement, as it acts like a sponge.

This is a temporary containment measure. Mold growth from an AC leak often extends into the wall cavity behind. For a proper resolution and to assess hidden damage, a professional inspection with moisture meters and, if necessary, lab sampling is recommended to confirm the extent and type of growth before any remediation begins.
