How to stop and prevent mold around AC vents?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be constantly damp around the vents, and I've started seeing these small black spots on the wall behind my bedroom's headboard. It's been getting worse since the humidity started rising a few weeks ago. What's the most effective way to stop this mold from spreading and prevent it from coming back next season?

The dampness and black spots indicate active mold growth, likely fueled by condensation from your AC unit meeting Dubai's high humidity. This is a common issue here, especially in areas like JVC where humidity can spike.

First, address the immediate problem. Wipe the damp vents and visible mold with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Never use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can worsen indoor air quality. Move your headboard away from the wall to improve air circulation, as stagnant air behind furniture is a prime spot for mold.

To prevent recurrence, the root cause must be fixed. The constant dampness suggests your AC may be set too cold, causing excessive condensation, or the drain line could be partially clogged. Adjust your thermostat to a slightly higher temperature (around 22-23°C) to reduce the temperature differential. Ensure the AC drain line is clear; a regularly maintained unit should not leak moisture.

For a long-term solution, control indoor humidity. Run a dehumidifier, especially during the more humid months, to keep levels below 60%. Use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms. If the black spots reappear quickly or cover a large area (more than a square foot), the mold may be growing within the AC unit or inside the wall. This requires a professional inspection with a borescope and possibly air or swab testing to identify the species and source, as simply cleaning the surface will not stop it.
