How to stop and prevent mold from AC in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be constantly damp around the vents, and I’ve started finding small black spots on the wall behind my bedroom curtains. We run the AC 24/7 but the humidity still feels high, especially since the weather changed last month. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold from spreading and prevent it for good?

The dampness and black spots are classic signs of condensation-related mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The most effective strategy is a combination of immediate containment and addressing the root cause of the moisture.

First, for the existing mold, avoid simply wiping it with bleach, as this can disturb spores. Carefully clean the visible spots on the wall with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning agent. For the AC vent itself, do not attempt to clean inside the ductwork, as this can spread contamination throughout your home.

The root cause is almost always excess humidity condensing on cold surfaces. To stop it for good, you must control the indoor moisture level. Ensure your AC unit is set to a temperature that minimizes the difference between the cold air and the room temperature; a setting between 22-24°C is often recommended. More critically, run a dedicated dehumidifier in the affected room, especially during the more humid months. This is the single most effective action for prevention.

Improve air circulation immediately. Move furniture away from walls, open curtains daily, and use ceiling fans if available. For the AC unit itself, a professional inspection is crucial. The constant dampness suggests possible issues like a clogged condensate drain line, which causes water to back up, or an undersized unit that isn't properly dehumidifying the air. Only a certified technician can diagnose and resolve this.

For persistent or widespread issues, especially if there's a musty odor or health symptoms are present, a professional mold inspection that includes air and surface sampling is advised. This identifies the species and concentration, which dictates the correct remediation protocol and verifies that the source has been addressed after cleanup. In many cases, the mold behind the wall is more extensive than what is visible.
