How to stop and prevent mold in a humid bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom in the Jumeirah villa always feels damp, and I just spotted black speckles forming along the bottom of the wall behind our wardrobe. We run the AC constantly, but with the humidity lately, it doesn't seem to be enough. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold from spreading and prevent it from coming back for good?

The mold behind your wardrobe is likely due to a combination of high humidity and a cold surface. The wall behind furniture can become a condensation point as the AC cools it, but the furniture traps the damp air. The first step is to move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow for air circulation.

For immediate action, clean the visible mold with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Wear a mask and gloves. However, this only addresses the surface issue. The underlying cause is excess moisture. In Dubai's climate, where outdoor humidity often exceeds 80-90%, AC systems must work correctly not just to cool, but to dehumidify. A unit that is undersized, set too warm, or has a clogged drain pan will not remove enough moisture from the air.

To prevent recurrence, ensure your AC is set to a temperature that minimizes condensation, typically between 22-24°C. Run it in "dry mode" if available. Use a standalone dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid winter months, to maintain indoor humidity levels below 60%. Improve air circulation by using ceiling fans and keeping bedroom doors open.

For a persistent problem, a professional inspection is recommended to check for hidden mold growth within the wall cavity and to assess your AC's performance. A proper diagnosis from a company with microbiological testing can identify the mold species and the precise moisture source, which is crucial for a permanent solution.
