How to stop black mold from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet in the bedroom, and now I’m seeing these black speckles appearing on the back of the wardrobe that’s against that wall. It’s been super humid lately and I’m worried it’s the start of black mold. What’s the best way to handle this myself to stop it from spreading before I have to call in a professional?

The black speckles are likely mold growth fueled by the AC condensation leak and high humidity. Your immediate goal is to remove the moisture source and clean the affected surface to prevent further spread.
First, address the leak. Wipe the AC unit's drain pan and check if the condensate drain line is clogged; a simple vacuum suction on the line's exit point can often clear it. Soak up all standing water from the carpet immediately. For the wardrobe, move it away from the wall to allow air circulation. Wipe the moldy surface with a microfiber cloth dampened with a mixture of warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Follow with a wipe using a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Allow the area to dry completely using a fan; a dehumidifier is highly recommended given Dubai's climate. This is a containment measure. Mold can penetrate porous materials like wood, particle board, and drywall. If the speckles return after cleaning, or if the affected area is larger than a square foot, the growth is likely established within the material itself. At that point, professional inspection and testing are needed to identify the species and scope. In Dubai, remediation often requires removing and replacing the contaminated building material to properly resolve the issue. |
