How to stop closet moisture and mildew smell permanently?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to feel damp and has a really strong mildew smell. I think it got worse after that really humid spell we had last week. I’ve pulled everything out and wiped down the walls, but the smell comes back within a day. What’s the most effective long-term solution to stop the moisture from building up in there in the first place?

The dampness and returning mildew smell indicate a persistent moisture source, likely condensation from the Dubai humidity. Wiping surfaces is a temporary fix as it doesn't address the root cause: the lack of air circulation and temperature differential in that enclosed space.

For a long-term solution, first check that the closet's interior wall is an exterior wall. If it is, ensure the building's external cladding and sealants are intact, as leaks are a common entry point for humid air. More often, the issue is that the closet is completely sealed off from your room's air conditioning. Stagnant, warm air meets the cooler wall surface, creating condensation that mould feeds on.

Start by improving ventilation. Leave the closet doors open for several hours each day to allow your room's AC to circulate dry, conditioned air inside. If that's not possible, consider installing a louvered door or ventilation grilles to permit passive airflow. Using a renewable desiccant like silica gel can help, but it's a secondary measure.

The most effective permanent fix is often installing a small, dedicated duct from your main AC system to blow directly into the closet. This equalizes the temperature and humidity, preventing condensation. A professional assessment is recommended to diagnose the exact moisture source; they can use thermal imaging to find hidden condensation points and advise on the best corrective measure, which in many Dubai homes is that additional AC vent.
