How to stop closet mold from AC condensation on leather?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has developed black speckles on some of our leather bags and shoes. The AC vent is right above it and I'm worried the constant cold air hitting the warmer items is causing condensation. We had a more humid winter than usual and I'm desperate to stop this from ruining more of our things. What's the most effective way to eliminate this mold for good and should I get the AC unit itself professionally cleaned?

The issue you're describing is a classic case of localized condensation-induced mold growth, a common problem in Dubai due to the extreme humidity and constant AC operation. The cold air from the vent directly striking the warmer leather items (which act as thermal mass) is dropping the surface temperature below the dew point, causing moisture to condense. This creates the perfect damp, organic environment for mold, specifically the black speckles you see, likely from the genus Cladosporium or Aspergillus.

For effective, permanent elimination, a multi-step remediation and prevention strategy is essential. First, the affected leather items must be professionally cleaned and treated with EPA-approved fungicides designed for delicate materials; improper cleaning can set the spores and cause permanent damage.

The core of the problem is the environmental condition. You must immediately adjust the HVAC airflow. Redirect the vent AWAY from the closet contents using adjustable louvers or a magnetic deflector. Critically, you need to reduce the humidity at its source. The AC unit itself is likely not effectively dehumidifying due to a dirty evaporator coil or an oversaturated drain pan, causing it to blow humid, cold air. A professional AC deep-clean and hygienization is not just recommended; it is mandatory to eliminate this microbial reservoir and restore proper dehumidification function.

Given the visible growth and the value of the contents, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent of the issue and ensure remediation meets Dubai Municipality's strict health and safety standards for indoor air quality.
