How to stop closet mold in Dubai villa without emptying it?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet, which is on the inside wall of our villa in Mirdif, constantly feels damp to the touch. We’ve lived here for two years and just noticed a few small black spots forming on the leather of my handbags and shoes stored inside. I run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help this one area. What's the most effective way to stop the mold from growing and protect my things without having to empty the entire closet?

This is likely a condensation issue, not just a dirty AC. The inside wall of a villa in Mirdif is susceptible to thermal bridging, where the outside heat cools on the cold interior wall surface, creating constant dampness that AC can't resolve.

First, move your leather items immediately to a drier location to prevent permanent damage. For the closet itself, start by reducing humidity at the source. Ensure the closet doors are left open for several hours each day to promote air circulation from the room's AC. A small, portable dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant dehumidifier bag placed inside the closet can help measurably reduce the localized moisture that the central AC misses.

Wipe down the affected interior surfaces with a vinegar solution, but this is only a temporary fix for visible spots. The underlying dampness will cause it to return. For a lasting solution, the wall's surface temperature needs to be addressed. This often requires a professional inspection to diagnose the exact cause, which could be insufficient insulation or a minor, hidden leak in the wall cavity. They can perform non-invasive moisture mapping to find the core issue. In many Dubai villas, the most effective permanent fix involves adding a vapor barrier or improving the wall's insulation to prevent the condensation from forming in the first place.
