How to stop closet mold in humid Dubai weather?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on the outer wall. I pulled out some winter clothes I stored last month and found small black spots on a couple of leather bags. With the humidity rising again, what’s the most effective way to stop this from spreading and prevent it coming back?

First, remove all items from the closet and inspect the wall and any stored goods. The black spots on leather are a strong indicator of active mold growth. Clean affected non-porous items like leather with a solution of diluted white vinegar; porous items like paper or fabric may need professional restoration or disposal if heavily contaminated.

The damp smell on the outer wall suggests condensation or a minor water intrusion, common in Jumeirah villas due to high humidity and temperature differences between air-conditioned rooms and warmer walls. Wipe down all interior surfaces with a microfiber cloth and a mold-inhibiting cleaner. Ensure the closet is completely dry before returning items.

To prevent recurrence, address the humidity source. Leave the closet doors open periodically to allow air circulation from the room's AC. Consider using a moisture-absorbing product like silica gel packs inside the closet. For the outer wall, check for any cracks in the exterior rendering that could be letting in ambient moisture, which is a frequent issue in the UAE climate.

If the smell persists or you find extensive visible growth on the wall itself, the mold may be growing within the wall cavity. In such cases, a professional inspection with a borescope is needed to assess the extent. Remediation often requires removing a section of drywall to address the root cause, as surface cleaning alone will not be sufficient for a recurring problem.
