How to stop closet mold in humid master bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to develop black spots on some leather bags and in the corners. It’s been like this since the humidity really spiked a couple of months ago, and even though I run the AC constantly, the room still feels damp. What’s the most effective way to control the moisture in this specific area to stop it from coming back?

Closet mold in a Dubai master bedroom is almost always a condensation issue caused by the high humidity and constant cooling. The AC lowers the air temperature, but if the humidity isn't also being removed effectively, that moist air seeps into the cooler, stagnant closet space and condenses on your leather goods and walls.

First, improve air circulation immediately. Keep the closet doors open as much as possible and use a small battery-operated dehumidifier or a quiet fan inside to move the air. For leather items, wipe them down with a dry, soft cloth and move them to a drier, more ventilated area temporarily.

The root cause is likely an imbalance in your room's environment. Your AC should be set to a "Dry" mode if available, which prioritizes dehumidification over cooling. Ensure the bedroom door isn't always closed, as this traps humid air. Check that the AC vent isn't blowing cold air directly into the closed closet, as this creates a major cold spot for condensation.

For a permanent solution, the closet may need its own controlled ventilation. This can be as simple as installing louvered doors or a small, dedicated exhaust vent. In many villas and older apartments, the AC unit itself may be undersized for the humidity load or its drain line could be faulty, requiring a professional HVAC check.

If the mold is widespread or has penetrated porous materials, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the species and the exact moisture source. They can perform a humidity map of the room to pinpoint why that closet is a problem spot and recommend targeted remediation, which is often necessary for recurrent issues in our climate.
