How to stop damp wall mold in my seaside bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom’s corner wall, which faces the sea in our Marina apartment, always feels slightly damp. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small, dark speckled patches appearing there, especially after the recent humid weather. I’m really worried it’s the start of black mold and want to stop it before it gets worse and affects our health. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity in that specific area to prevent the mold from growing back after I clean it?

The dampness is likely due to condensation from the temperature difference between your cold air-conditioned room and the warm, humid sea air outside. This constant moisture creates the perfect environment for mold, which is common in Marina apartments.

First, clean the existing mold with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Always wear a mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid spore exposure.

To control humidity and prevent regrowth, focus on reducing condensation. Increase air circulation against that wall. Rearranging furniture to allow air to flow or using a small fan pointed at the corner can be very effective. Wipe down any visible condensation on the wall daily with a dry cloth.

Your AC is your primary dehumidifier. Ensure it's set to a consistent, moderate temperature (around 22-24°C) to minimize extreme temperature differentials. Check that the unit is draining properly and not overflowing. Running the AC in "dry mode" during high-humidity periods can also help extract more moisture from the air.

For a more permanent solution, consider the building's envelope. The issue might be insufficient insulation within that exterior wall. A professional inspection can determine if there's a leak or a thermal bridge. In many cases, applying a mold-resistant, vapor-barrier primer and paint after the area is completely dry and clean can provide a long-term blocking layer.

If the patches are larger than a square foot, or if you or family members experience persistent allergies or respiratory irritation, a professional inspection with lab testing is recommended to identify the mold species and the moisture source definitively.
