How to stop mold from growing back in my closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get small black spots on the leather shoes and bags I store in there. I first noticed it a couple of weeks after the heavy winter rains, and even though I’ve wiped it away, it keeps coming back. I’m really worried about this affecting our health while we sleep. What’s the most effective long-term solution to stop this mold from growing back in the closet?

The recurring mold in your closet is likely due to trapped moisture, a common issue in Dubai after winter rains when cooler outside walls meet warm, humid indoor air. The most effective long-term solution requires a two-part approach: addressing the source of moisture and modifying the closet's environment.

First, inspect the exterior wall for any cracks or compromised sealant that may be allowing rainwater ingress; this is a critical step often overlooked. Inside, ensure there's adequate air circulation. Leave the closet doors ajar periodically and consider installing a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. Avoid storing leather goods directly against the outside wall; move them to an interior wall or use open shelving to promote airflow. Wiping surfaces with a diluted white vinegar solution can deter regrowth but is not a permanent fix on its own.

For a definitive solution, a professional inspection is recommended to identify if the moisture is from condensation or a hidden leak. They use thermal imaging to pinpoint cold spots and moisture meters to quantify the problem, which is essential for a lasting repair. In many Dubai villas, this is a condensation issue exacerbated by AC settings; slightly lowering the thermostat can reduce the temperature differential that causes water to form on cold surfaces.

If the problem persists after these steps, lab testing of the mold can identify the species, which informs the necessary remediation protocol to ensure it is properly addressed.
