How to stop mold in a damp villa storage room?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our family villa in Jumeirah has a storage room on the ground floor that always feels damp, especially since the humidity started rising a couple of months ago. I went to get some winter clothes out and found a bunch of my jackets have black speckles on them. We run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help that one enclosed space. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity in a single room to stop this mold from coming back?

High humidity in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like storage rooms is a common issue in Dubai villas, even with AC running. The AC cools the main living areas but often doesn't adequately circulate dry air into closed-off rooms.
First, address the immediate problem. The moldy jackets need to be professionally cleaned or discarded to prevent spores from spreading. For the room itself, visible mold on surfaces should be cleaned with a detergent solution. However, cleaning alone won't stop it from returning without tackling the moisture source. The most effective solution is to control the room's humidity directly. For a single room, a standalone dehumidifier is your best investment. Choose a unit with a capacity suitable for the room's size (e.g., a 10-20L/day model for a small storage room) and set it to maintain humidity below 60%, the threshold where mold growth is significantly inhibited. Empty its reservoir regularly. Improve air circulation. Keep the door ajar and use a small oscillating fan to prevent stagnant, moist air from settling. If the room has an AC vent, ensure it is fully open and unobstructed. For rooms without an AC supply, a small exhaust fan installed in a wall or door can help exchange air. Check for any hidden leaks from adjacent plumbing or seepage through the walls, which is a frequent issue. If the dampness persists despite these measures, the mold growth may be more extensive within the walls or ceiling. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is recommended to identify the core problem and guide remediation. |
