How to stop mold in bedroom closet for good?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah Village Circle townhouse has started to get black spots on the leather shoes and bags stored inside. I first noticed a weird damp smell about a month ago, but the visible mold is new. I run a dehumidifier in the main room, but it doesn't seem to help the enclosed closet space. What's the most effective way to stop this from spreading and prevent it from coming back for good?

First, isolate the affected items immediately. Leather goods are porous and can harbor mold spores, spreading the problem. Wipe down the shoes and bags with a mild soap solution (like diluted castile soap) and dry them completely in a well-ventilated area away from the closet. Do not return them until the source is fixed.
The damp smell preceding visible growth points to a persistent moisture source. In JVC townhouses, this is often one of two things: a small plumbing leak in the wall shared with a bathroom, or more commonly, extreme condensation from the AC supply line or duct running through that closet space. The enclosed nature of the closet traps this humidity, making a room dehumidifier ineffective. To stop the spread, you need to identify and address that moisture source. Visually inspect for any water staining on walls or ceilings. Feel the AC metal duct inside the closet for condensation—if it's dripping cold water, that's your culprit. Insulating that duct is a critical first step. For true prevention, the space must be dried and kept dry. After fixing the moisture source, clean the closet walls and shelves with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution to address surface spores. Then, to manage the micro-climate, install a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant dehumidifier like DampRid inside the closet itself. Ensure there is some air movement; leaving the closet door ajar or installing a small, quiet USB fan can drastically reduce stagnant, humid air. If the mold returns after these steps or you cannot find the moisture source, a professional inspection is recommended. They use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint hidden condensation and moisture meters to quantify the problem, which is often necessary in Dubai's climate where high external humidity meets cold AC surfaces. |
