How to stop mold in closet on leather items?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get these black speckles on a few of my leather bags and shoes. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago and it’s slowly getting worse, even though the rest of the room seems fine. I run a dehumidifier occasionally, but I’m worried it’s not enough. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold from spreading in our humid climate, and should I be cleaning the items myself or calling a professional?

Black speckles on leather in a closet are a classic sign of a high-humidity microclimate, which is common here due to our air conditioning cycles creating condensation on cooler interior walls. The leather's organic material is an ideal food source for mold.
First, isolate the affected items in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent spores from spreading to other belongings. For cleaning, gently wipe the leather with a soft cloth slightly dampened with a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar or a dedicated leather cleaner. Never oversaturate the material, and allow it to dry completely away from direct sunlight, which can damage it. This can address surface growth on the items themselves. However, cleaning the items alone is a temporary fix if the root cause remains. The closet's environment must be corrected. Increase air circulation inside by leaving the door ajar and using a small battery-operated dehumidifier or a desiccant like silica gel packets. Wipe down all interior closet surfaces with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution to remove existing spores. Crucially, identify the moisture source. An interior wall in a Dubai villa or apartment can often be colder than the room's dew point, causing condensation you don't see. Check for any plumbing leaks in adjacent walls and ensure your room's AC is functioning properly to manage humidity. If the growth returns quickly after cleaning or is widespread, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact condensation source within the wall and perform air testing to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation method. In many cases, improving insulation on the cold wall or adjusting the AC system is the permanent solution. |
