How to stop mold in my Dubai villa wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has felt really damp ever since the weather cooled down in December. We’ve just pulled our winter clothes out of the walk-in closet and found small black spots on a few of my leather jackets and wool coats. I’m so upset and worried it will spread to everything else. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity and stop this mold from growing in our wardrobe?

Mold growth in wardrobes during Dubai's cooler months is extremely common due to high ambient humidity condensing on cooler surfaces like walls and leather goods. The most effective control is managing the microclimate inside the closet.

Start by immediately removing the affected items. For leather, wipe gently with a dilute vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water) and allow to dry completely away from the closet. For wool, dry cleaning is often the safest option. Thoroughly vacuum and wipe down the entire closet interior with a mild detergent solution.

To prevent recurrence, you must reduce humidity. A standalone dehumidifier is the fastest solution; run it in the bedroom with the closet doors open. For a more integrated approach, silica gel desiccant bags placed inside the wardrobe can help absorb excess moisture. Improving air circulation is critical—avoid overpacking the closet and consider leaving the doors ajar for a few hours each day.

The root cause is often the room's overall humidity. Ensure your AC is running consistently, even in winter, as its primary function is to dehumidify. Set it to a comfortable temperature, typically 22-24°C, to prevent condensation on cold walls. Check that no water leaks from adjacent bathrooms or AC units are contributing to the dampness.

For persistent issues, a professional inspection can identify hidden moisture sources within the wall or subfloor that are feeding the problem. In many Dubai villas, the plaster itself can retain moisture, requiring more targeted drying techniques. A certified mold assessment, including moisture mapping, will pinpoint the exact cause and scope.
