How to stop mold in my Jumeirah villa closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah, has started getting a really bad mold problem on the clothes and the back wall. It’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I clean it, the black spots keep coming back. What’s the most effective long-term solution to stop this moisture from building up in the first place?

The recurring mold in your closet is a classic symptom of condensation on a cold surface, which is very common in villas here. Your outside wall is likely cooler than the humid air inside, causing moisture to condense and feed the mold. Cleaning the visible growth is only temporary if the moisture source isn't addressed.
First, improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors open as much as possible and consider installing a louvered door to allow constant airflow. A small, battery-operated dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant box inside the closet can measurably reduce the local humidity level that's causing the condensation. For a more permanent solution, the wall itself needs attention. The issue may be insufficient insulation in that external wall, allowing the interior surface to become too cold. A professional inspection can identify if this is a thermal bridging issue. In many cases, properly insulating the wall from the inside is the most effective long-term fix to prevent the surface condensation from forming in the first place. Given the persistent nature of the problem, a professional assessment is recommended. They can use a thermal imaging camera to pinpoint the exact cold spots and a moisture meter to confirm the levels within the wall structure. This will determine if the solution is improving room ventilation, adding local dehumidification, or requires addressing the building envelope itself. |
