How to stop mold in my villa's master closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall in our Jumeirah villa, constantly feels damp. I've started finding small black spots on some of our leather bags and shoes stored in there, and the musty smell is getting stronger, especially since the weather turned more humid. I run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help that one corner. What's the most effective way to stop this mold from growing and damaging our things?

Closet mold in Jumeirah villas is common due to high humidity and temperature differences between exterior walls and air-conditioned rooms. The first step is to remove all affected items to prevent further damage and clean any visible mold from surfaces with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner—never use bleach, as it can worsen the problem on porous surfaces.

The core issue is likely insufficient air circulation and a localized humidity source. Running the AC constantly may not help if the closet door is kept closed or the room's unit isn't effectively drawing moisture from that enclosed space. Leave the closet doors open as much as possible and use a small portable dehumidifier or a desiccant box inside it. Check for any hidden leaks from adjacent bathrooms or faulty insulation in the exterior wall, which are frequent culprits.

For a persistent problem, a professional inspection is advised to identify the moisture source definitively. They can perform a thermal imaging scan to find condensation cold spots and use a moisture meter to check the wall's saturation level. In many cases, improving the room's AC airflow with a duct booster fan or having the system rebalanced can resolve the issue. If the mold growth is extensive or keeps returning, a lab test can identify the species and inform the correct remediation approach.
