How to stop mold in wardrobe and treat clothes?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Mirdif villa has a persistent damp smell, especially on the colder side of the room where we keep the wardrobe. I just pulled out our winter clothes and noticed a few of my jackets have what looks like faint black speckling on the inside. We run the AC constantly, but the mustiness always comes back after a few days. What's the most effective way to treat the clothes and stop the mold from growing back inside the wardrobe itself?

The black speckling on your clothes is likely mildew or mold, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate, especially in enclosed spaces like wardrobes on cold exterior walls. The constant AC creates a temperature differential that leads to condensation, providing the moisture mold needs to grow on organic materials like cotton, leather, and dust.

For the affected clothes, do not simply wash them. Brush off any visible mold outdoors to avoid spreading spores inside. Then, wash them at the highest temperature the fabric allows, adding a cup of white vinegar or a mold-killing laundry additive to the cycle. Sun-drying is highly effective, as UV light helps kill remaining spores. For dry-clean-only items, point out the mold to your cleaner so they can pre-treat it.

To stop it from returning, you must address the wardrobe's environment. First, empty and thoroughly clean the interior with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth. Ensure the wardrobe is completely dry before returning clothes. Increase airflow by not overpacking the wardrobe and leaving space between items and the wall. A renewable desiccant dehumidifier, like silica gel pods, placed inside will passively absorb excess moisture.

The recurring mustiness suggests a deeper issue. The cold wall likely has a higher surface temperature than the room's dew point, causing constant condensation. The most effective permanent solution is to improve insulation behind the wardrobe or adjust your AC settings to reduce the extreme temperature differential. For persistent problems, a professional inspection can identify hidden condensation points and measure the humidity levels at the source. In many Mirdif villas, this requires a targeted approach to manage microclimates within rooms.
