How to stop moldy smell from AC vents permanently?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a faint, damp smell every time it kicks on, especially in the master bedroom. We just had our annual AC deep clean a few months ago, but the smell came back after that last humid spell we had. I’m constantly wiping down the walls to prevent condensation. What’s the most effective way to stop this moldy smell from coming through the AC vents for good?

The damp smell returning after a deep clean points to a persistent moisture source the cleaning didn't address. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold regrowth inside the unit or ductwork.

Focus on controlling moisture at the source. Ensure your AC unit's drain line is completely clear and the drain pan is functioning; a clog is a common culprit. Check that the unit's insulation around cooling coils isn't degraded, as this causes condensation inside the system itself. While wiping walls helps, use a dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially during humid spells, to keep ambient humidity below 60%, which significantly slows mold growth.

A standard AC clean often only addresses accessible components. The smell likely originates from mold growth within the evaporator coils or deep inside the ductwork, areas that require specialized tools for a proper cleaning. For a permanent solution, a professional inspection using a borescope to view the internal condition of the ducts and evaporator coil is necessary. This can identify the specific location and extent of the contamination. Remediation may require targeted antimicrobial treatment of the coil and plenum or, in severe cases, duct cleaning. Always request before-and-after testing to verify the issue is resolved.
