How to stop wardrobe mold in humid UAE climate?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the outside, has started getting patches of black mold on my leather bags and shoes. I only noticed it after the heavy humidity last week and now I'm worried it's going to ruin all my clothes. I run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help this one area. What's the most effective way to stop this moisture from getting in, should I use a dehumidifier or silica gel packets inside the wardrobe, or is there a better solution for our UAE climate?

That black mold on your leather goods is a classic sign of condensation forming on your cooler external wall, which then gets trapped inside the enclosed wardrobe space. Running the AC does lower overall humidity, but it often can't circulate enough in these dead-air zones to prevent this localized issue.

For your immediate items, wipe the mold off the leather with a dilute vinegar or soap solution, then let them dry completely away from the wardrobe. Do not put them back until the source is fixed.

The most effective long-term solution is to stop the condensation. First, improve air circulation. Leave some space between the wall and your clothing, and avoid overpacking the wardrobe. If possible, leave the wardrobe doors ajar for a few hours each day to allow the cool, dry air from your AC room to circulate inside. A small battery-operated dehumidifier or silica gel packets can help absorb excess moisture inside the unit, but they are a secondary measure to good airflow.

For a more permanent fix, inspect the external wall for any cracks or gaps where humid air could be infiltrating and seal them. In many UAE villas, the wall itself may be colder than the room's dew point, causing constant condensation. In such cases, professional assessment can identify if insulation or a vapor barrier is needed to break the thermal bridge.

If the mold growth is extensive, recurring despite these measures, or you notice a musty smell, a professional inspection with moisture mapping can pinpoint the exact source of the water intrusion.
