How to treat AC leak mold on carpet in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC unit in our master bedroom in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet below, and now I’m starting to see a few small black spots spreading out from the damp area. We run the AC constantly, especially over the last few humid months, and I’m worried this is the beginning of a major mold problem. What’s the most effective way to dry this out and treat the carpet to prevent the mold from coming back completely?

The damp carpet from your AC leak is an ideal environment for mold growth in Dubai's humid climate. First, stop the leak at its source; have an HVAC technician repair the AC unit's clogged drain line or faulty condensate pan, as this is the most common cause. Until it's fixed, the moisture will continue.
For the carpet, move any furniture and extract as much standing water as possible with a wet/dry vacuum. Then, use fans and a dehumidifier to dry the area thoroughly—this is critical. Simply wiping the surface is not enough; the padding underneath is likely saturated and will wick moisture back up. For a small area, you may lift a corner of the carpet to check and dry the subfloor. The visible black spots indicate active growth. Scrubbing with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated antimicrobial cleaner can treat the surface mold on non-porous materials, but carpet fibers are porous. The mold may have penetrated deep into the carpet and padding, which is nearly impossible to fully sanitize yourself. Given the constant AC use and high humidity, the risk of the mold recurring or spreading is significant. The most effective long-term solution is to remove and replace the affected section of carpet and its padding once the leak is repaired and the area is completely dry. For a proper assessment of the extent of the growth, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly air testing is recommended to ensure it hasn't spread to walls or other hidden areas. |
