How to treat AC mold on closet wall myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a little water onto the carpet in the master bedroom closet. It’s been a recurring issue since the humidity started rising a few weeks ago, and I’ve noticed a few small black spots on the back wall. I’ve wiped it down, but I’m worried it’s just going to come back. What’s the best way to treat this area myself to kill the mold and prevent it from spreading?

Recurring AC condensation on carpet is a common issue in Dubai's high humidity and often leads to mold. The black spots indicate active growth, and wiping only removes surface spores.
First, address the water source. The AC drain line is likely clogged or the drip pan is overflowing. A local AC technician can clear the line, which is the only way to stop the moisture feeding the mold. For the affected area, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the wall with a solution of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted white vinegar spray. Allow the area to dry completely with a fan; this is critical in our humid climate. The damp carpet pad underneath is likely contaminated and may need to be cut out and replaced, as mold will regrow from it. For a small area, this can manage the issue. However, because the leak has likely seeped into the building structure, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess hidden damage and ensure the mold type isn't one of the more persistent species common here. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness you can't see. |
