How to treat and prevent bedroom AC mold?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a small black spot in the corner behind the curtain that I’m sure is mold. With the humidity creeping up again, I’m worried it’s just going to get worse. What’s the most effective way to treat this myself to stop it from spreading, and how can I prevent it from coming back for good?

Address the leak first—this is the priority. Turn off the AC, dry the area completely with a wet/dry vacuum and fans, and clean the small black spot with a solution of detergent and warm water. Do not use bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can damage porous materials.

Preventing its return requires controlling moisture. Ensure your AC drain line is not clogged; this is a common cause of leaks, especially with Dubai's year-round usage. Keep the bedroom well-ventilated when the AC is off to reduce condensation buildup. For a persistent leak or if the mould covers an area larger than a square meter, it is advisable to get a professional assessment. The high humidity here means hidden mould in walls or under carpets is a real risk, and improper handling can spread spores. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and, if necessary, lab analysis to identify the full extent and species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol.
