How to treat and prevent black mold behind a cold wall?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind my wardrobe in the master bedroom of our Jumeirah villa feels damp and cold to the touch, and I just found a patch of black spots there. This room is always colder than the rest of the house because we run the AC constantly. What is the best way to treat this and prevent it from coming back without having to move the massive built-in cupboard every few months?

Black mold behind a wardrobe on a cold wall is a classic Dubai condensation issue. The constant AC chills the wall, and when humid air seeps in, it condenses on the cold surface, creating the damp environment mold needs. The first step is to move the furniture to fully assess the extent. For a small patch, cleaning with a vinegar or diluted hydrogen peroxide solution can be effective; never use bleach as it only removes the color and can worsen the problem by adding moisture.

To prevent recurrence, you must address the condensation. Increase air circulation behind the cupboard—even a small gap of a few inches can make a significant difference. A dehumidifier in the room, especially during more humid winter months, can help reduce the overall moisture load. For a more permanent solution, improving the wall's insulation is key to preventing the surface from becoming so cold. Applying an anti-condensation or insulating paint can also create a barrier.

For any area larger than one square meter, or if the wall itself feels soft, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify if there’s a hidden leak compounding the condensation problem and perform lab testing to confirm the mold type, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. In many older UAE villas, this is a recurring issue that requires these environmental corrections, not just cleaning, for a long-term fix.
