How to treat and prevent black mold in a humid UAE closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has developed a few small black mold spots. We live in a high-rise in Marina, and even though we run the AC constantly, it feels more humid in that corner. I’m worried it will spread to our clothes and cause health issues. What’s the most effective way to treat the existing mold in the closet and prevent it from coming back, especially with the UAE's humidity?

Based on your description of a high-rise in the Marina, this is a classic case of localized humidity leading to condensation and mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai's climate. The constant AC can sometimes create microclimates, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets on interior walls, where cold surfaces meet warmer, humid air.

For the existing small spots, you can carefully clean them with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a specialized EPA-approved mold cleaner. Never use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the root cause or the hyphae (roots) within the material. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning. However, this is only a temporary surface solution.

The critical step is addressing the moisture source. The humidity in that corner indicates either insufficient airflow from your AC system or a potential issue with the wall itself, such as a hidden plumbing leak or inadequate insulation creating a cold spot (thermal bridging). Simply wiping the mold will not prevent its return.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified technicians use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden cold spots and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact humidity level and source. This is crucial for a permanent solution, as per Dubai Municipality's guidelines for healthy indoor environments. Remediation may involve improving ventilation, addressing AC airflow distribution, or applying anti-microbial coatings.
