How to treat and prevent black mold in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with the recent humidity, it seems to have gotten a bit bigger. I’m worried it’s a sign of a bigger problem. What’s the best way to treat this myself to stop it from spreading, and how can I prevent it from coming back for good?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the temperature differential caused by year-round air conditioning. The exterior wall location strongly suggests a condensation issue, where cool indoor air meets the warmer wall surface, creating a moisture pocket ideal for mold.

For a small patch (less than 1 square foot), you can attempt remediation yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Do not simply wipe it, as this disperses spores. Instead, mist the area with a diluted detergent solution (e.g., 1 part detergent to 10 parts water) to suppress spores, then scrub with a stiff brush. Afterwards, disinfect with a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water. Allow the area to dry completely. However, this is only a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't addressed.

The root cause is the condensation. To prevent recurrence, you must improve ventilation and reduce humidity. Ensure your AC is servicing this room effectively and that the closet door is left ajar to allow air circulation. Consider using a moisture-absorbing desiccant like silica gel inside the closet. For a more permanent solution, inspect the exterior wall for any cracks or breaches in the vapor barrier that may be allowing humid air to penetrate.

Given that the patch is growing, a professional inspection is highly recommended. What you see on the surface is often just the "bloom," and the hyphae (root structure) may have penetrated deeper into the drywall. We at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture and condensation points that are not visible to the naked eye, which is crucial for a permanent solution in our climate.
