How to treat and prevent black mold in humid apartment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall facing the sea in our Marina apartment. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading because my clothes have started to smell a bit damp. What's the best way to treat this existing mold and, more importantly, how can I stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold in a Marina apartment is a common issue due to the high humidity and sea-facing walls, which are prone to condensation. For the existing patch, wearing gloves and a mask, scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Discard any porous items like cardboard boxes or severely affected fabrics that smell damp, as the spores are likely embedded.

Preventing its return requires addressing the moisture source. This is an interior wall, so the mold is likely feeding on humidity from the air condensing on the cooler wall surface. Wipe down the closet walls regularly to remove moisture. Increase air circulation by using a small battery-operated dehumidifier or a desiccant box inside the closet, and avoid overpacking clothes to allow air to move. For the room itself, ensure your AC is running consistently to control humidity, even when you're out; setting it to a slightly lower temperature can help reduce condensation. Check that the AC drain line is not blocked and is properly discharging condensation.

In many cases, the mold is a symptom of a larger humidity imbalance in the apartment. If the patch is larger than one square meter, returns quickly after cleaning, or you notice a persistent musty smell throughout the room, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to identify hidden dampness in the wall and air quality tests to quantify the spore count, which is crucial for understanding the actual risk and ensuring the remediation is effective.
