How to treat and prevent black mold in UAE humidity?« Back to Previous Page

Our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been feeling really humid lately, and I've just spotted a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been growing slowly over the winter months. I’m worried about my toddler breathing this in and I want to stop it for good. What's the most effective way to treat this mold and prevent it from coming back, especially with our UAE humidity?

Black mold in a JVC closet is a common issue here, driven by our high humidity and the condensation that forms on cooler interior walls, especially behind furniture. The immediate health risk for your toddler is irritation—congestion, coughing, or worsened allergies—so addressing it properly is important.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and can irritate the airways. Dry the area completely with a fan immediately after cleaning. However, cleaning only addresses the visible growth. The root cause is excess moisture. In the UAE, this is almost always due to condensation from the temperature differential between the AC-cooled room and the humid outdoor air, or a minor, unnoticed leak. To prevent recurrence, you must lower the humidity. Ensure your AC is running efficiently and set to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C. Use a dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially during the more humid winter months when AC use drops. Improve air circulation by moving storage boxes away from the walls and leaving closet doors ajar. For a recurring problem or if the mold covers a larger area, a professional inspection is recommended to identify hidden moisture sources within the wall or from AC drip lines. They can use thermal imaging to find condensation points and provide remediation protocols aligned with Dubai Municipality standards, which often include proper containment and air scrubbing to prevent spores from spreading. Verifiable post-remediation testing from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is truly resolved. |
