How to treat and prevent black mold on villa walls?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa, which is on an exterior wall. I'm worried it's from the constant high humidity, especially at night, but I don't know where to start. What's the most effective way to treat this and prevent it from spreading, aside from just running the AC non-stop?

Black mold on exterior walls in Jumeirah villas is a common issue directly tied to our climate's high humidity and condensation. The wall behind your sofa is a classic spot for it, as furniture restricts air circulation, allowing moisture to accumulate.

Start by identifying the moisture source. It's likely condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned interior and the hot exterior wall, exacerbated at night when humidity peaks. For immediate treatment, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product, not just bleach, which often only removes the surface color. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan after cleaning.

Prevention requires managing humidity and improving ventilation. Ensure your AC is serviced and draining properly, as a faulty unit can contribute to indoor humidity. Use a dehumidifier, especially in the evenings. Reposition furniture a few inches away from exterior walls to allow air to circulate. For a permanent fix, consider applying an anti-condensation or mold-resistant paint after the area is professionally cleaned and fully dry.

If the mold covers more than a few square feet, returns quickly after cleaning, or you notice a persistent musty smell, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint hidden condensation issues and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which guides the correct remediation protocol.
