How to treat and prevent closet mold in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the inside wall has developed these small black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. Our villa in Jumeirah is great, but with the recent humidity, I'm worried it's mold starting to spread. What's the best way to treat the items I already have and what can I do to stop the mold from coming back in that specific spot?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of surface mold growth, a common issue in Dubai villas due to the high ambient humidity, especially during summer months, and the year-round reliance on air conditioning which can create significant temperature differentials and condensation on cooler interior walls.

For the affected leather items, immediate action is required. Do not attempt to clean them with household cleaners like bleach, as this can damage the material. For non-porous leather, use a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% distilled water. Apply it sparingly with a soft, clean cloth in a well-ventilated area, then allow the items to dry completely away from direct sunlight. For suede or porous leather, a specialized leather cleaner is recommended. However, if the mold growth is extensive or has caused staining, consult a professional leather restorer.

To address the root cause in the closet, you must identify and rectify the moisture source. The inside wall location is a key indicator. This is often due to interstitial condensation where the cool AC air meets the warm external wall, or potentially a minor thermal bridge. First, empty the closet and thoroughly clean the interior surfaces with an EPA-approved fungicidal detergent. Improve air circulation by ensuring the closet is not overpacked and by installing a battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber like silica gel packs. Crucially, have a professional assess the wall for insulation deficiencies. In the UAE, remediation must comply with DM guidelines and ASTM standards.

For a definitive diagnosis of the mold type and a permanent solution to the moisture issue, a professional inspection is highly advised. Our certified technicians at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint condensation points and moisture meters to assess the wall's saturation level. We can provide a hygienization protocol and recommend structural modifications to prevent recurrence. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment.
