How to treat and prevent closet mold in humidity?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get black speckles on the leather bags and shoes I stored in there. It's been so humid lately even with the AC running constantly. I’m worried it's going to spread to our clothes. What’s the most effective way to treat the existing mold and what can I do to stop the humidity from causing this again?

The black speckles you're observing are a classic indicator of mold growth, likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, thriving due to elevated relative humidity within an enclosed space. In Dubai's climate, where external humidity levels are consistently high, interior wall closets are prime locations for condensation and microbial growth, even with AC running, due to poor air circulation and potential thermal bridging.

The most effective treatment protocol begins with immediate removal of the affected items. Leather goods should be professionally cleaned and disinfected with specialized biocides. For the closet itself, surface cleaning with a H₂O₂-based solution can remove visible growth but will not address the root cause or any hidden colonization within the walls. Given the potential for spore dissemination and hidden growth, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify condensation points and quantify humidity levels, which is critical for a permanent solution.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the microenvironment. First, ensure your AC system is correctly sized and maintained; it is your primary dehumidifier. Consider installing a standalone dehumidifier or a dedicated dehumidifying rod (like a Golden Rod) inside the closet to maintain humidity below 60%. Improve air circulation by leaving closet doors ajar periodically or installing louvered doors. Never store items, especially leather, directly against exterior walls.

For a comprehensive assessment and remediation that complies with Dubai Municipality's strict hygiene standards, I recommend contacting our specialists at Saniservice. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection and create a targeted prevention plan.
